Dan Simper's Biography

Dan Simper is a native of Northern Arizona. He was born in Holbrook, Arizona and has lived there much of his life. He and his wife, Ellen have been married almost 40 years. They are the parents of 6 children and almost one dozen grandchildren.

At present, Dan is an administrator at Northland Pioneer College; he is also creatively inclined, having produced numerous jewels of photography and contributing greatly to Artful Insights.

Another of Dan’s artistic inclinations has been woodworking, having made several hundred wood projects sharing his talents and skills with many friends and family members. He has developed techniques for the process in particular of making wood puzzles turning them into an art form, more than just puzzles.

Part of the enjoyment of working with wood, “making sawdust” as Dan calls it is as a therapeutic stress reliever. More than that is working with and gaining appreciation for all of the ways that wood has beauty, including the color spectrum of wood, the ways that sanding, staining, and varnishing changes and enhances the wood. Since wood has its own built in textural qualities, it is always an adventure to see how it turns out.
